A BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) executive today shared a video of the hybrid SUV Song L DM-i, signaling that the model may not be too far away from launch.
Lu Tian, general manager of BYD's Dynasty lineup sales division, shared the video on Weibo today, showing details of the Song L DM-i.
While both this new model and the Song L battery electric vehicle (BEV) use the Song L name, there are distinct differences in the design of the two.
BYD launched the Song L BEV on December 15, 2023 as the second shooting brake style SUV under the BYD umbrella after the Denza N7.
On May 10, BYD rolled out another shooting brake style SUV, the Sea Lion 07 EV, the first model under the e-Platform 3.0 Evo platform.
Unlike the Song L BEV, the hybrid Song L DM-i looks more like a regular SUV.
"Leading the new trend of mid-size SUVs, the Song L DM-i is here," Lu wrote today.
The Song L DM-i is expected to be equipped with the same DM 5.0 hybrid system as the Qin L DM-i hybrid sedan, resulting in lower fuel consumption and longer combined range.
On May 28, BYD introduced its fifth-generation DM (Dual Mode) technology, or DM 5.0, which brings lower fuel consumption than its predecessor.
The company launched the Qin L DM-i and Seal 06 DM-i on the same day, and they are the first two models to feature DM 5.0 technology, each with a combined range of more than 2,000 kilometers on a full tank of fuel and a full battery charge.
The Song L DM-i measures 4,780 mm in length, 1,898 mm in width and 1,670 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,782 mm, according to a previous regulatory filing.
For comparison, the Song L EV has a length, width and height of 4,840 mm, 1,950 mm and 1,560 mm, respectively, and a wheelbase of 2,930 mm.
The Song L DM-i is powered by a 1.5 L engine with a displacement of 74 kW. It offers two battery options with capacities of 18.316 kWh and 26.593 kWh.
BYD sold a record 341,658 new energy vehicles (NEVs) in June, up 35.02 percent year-on-year, and up 2.97 percent from May, according to data it announced on July 1.
This includes 340,211 passenger NEVs and 1,447 commercial NEVs.
